At this stage you are probably asking.....
"What is an Eco-Village and what makes it so special?"
An Eco-Village is a small community of 50 to 2000 people united by a common goal, usually based on shared ecological, social and/or spiritual values.
The 'Eco' comes from an awareness of building and living practices and the effect they have on the environment. Working with the simple principle of not taking more away from the Earth than one gives back.
The 'Village' allows for the growth of community-based activities while retaining each individual’s right.
The Eco Village model is a conscious response to the extremely complex problem of how to transform our human settlements, whether they be villages, towns or cities, into full-featured ‘sustainable communities’, harmlessly integrated into the natural environment.
Eco-Village principles can be applied to urban and to rural settings, to developing and developed countries, everywhere in the world.
Kookaburra Park became an Eco-Village made up of 124 freehold sites surrounded by 360 acres of common property in 1993.
Kookaburra Park Eco-Village is designed using Permaculture Principles making sure that the best features of the land are left for all to enjoy.
Eco-Villages move toward sustainability by putting a high priority on:
- Ecological Building
- Renewable Energy Systems
Many solar water heating systems have been installed in our village - Local Organic Food Production
- Sustainable Economics
LETS is an acronym for Local Exchange Trading System which allows trade in goods and services without the use of money. - Community Support
The community are involved in many projects, working bees, the development of community policy, festivals and celebrations, decision-making, governance and leadership, decision-making processes, and many social activities.
Kookaburra Park Eco-Village, located in Gin Gin, Queensland, Australia, strives, as many other Eco-Villages, to encourage sustainable development and to be an example of a socially and environmentally sustainable community. This includes sustainable business, organic farming and building development as well as architectural design.
Kookaburra Park Eco-Village is a 485 acre ecosystem of diverse sub-tropical Australian bushland. Part of it is 124, one acre, freehold allotments strategically placed within the bushland utilising permaculture ecosystem principals. The rest of the land (common land) is owned by all Lot Holders.
